You may have seen Novel Effect on ABC's Shark Tank or this could be your first introduction. Novel Effect is an IOS app that listens to a person read a book and adds music and sound effects to enhance the reading experience. The app is free and the list of books in their database is huge and growing all the time. Classics like Where the Wild Things Are, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, and The Cat in the Hat are already available in the app.

Here is how you make it work:


  • Download Novel Effect from the App Store.
  • You will need to give the app permission to use the microphone on the device.
  • Open and select the book you will be reading.
  • Select "Read the Book" and wait for it to download.
  • Begin reading and the app will follow along with sound effects.
