School buildings are closed, teachers are working remotely, and students have lost the traditions that come with graduation and end of year activities. Hop on any social media platform and you will see accolades and criticism for the approaches that local districts have used and what parents feel about having to guide their children's education. I feel the need to give some perspective.<br />
<br />
Throughout my 20 year career in Education, I worked for three districts that used 1:1 devices with their students. These were programs at the Secondary level, so only middle school and high schools were impacted. Each district had chosen a different device and planned for the rollouts in different ways. In one district, I started working on year 1, another on year 3, and the last was a well-oiled machine of many years. But all of these districts had some things in common:<br />
<br />
1. Infrastructure: Regardless of the size of a student body or school campus, the move from several computer labs to all students having access to a device requires upgrade of infrastructure. Running new cables, adding access points and updating servers is both costly and time consuming. Most districts have to bid these jobs out and bring in contractors to complete the work.<br />
<br />
2. Connectivity: Once your infrastructure is robust enough to take the traffic, the connectivity for students once they leave the school building must be considered. In urban settings, places like McDonalds and Starbucks may help with free access to WiFi. Schools in more rural settings have to plan differently by acquiring hotspots for checkout or much used locations like parking lots and community centers.<br />
<br />
3. Software and programs: Schools must assess and select digital programs for instruction and eBook textbooks for instructional materials. This usually encompasses similar steps to adopting new textbooks and requires many stakeholders to offer input. Once selection and purchase are in place, creating accounts and teaching users how to use the programs must be scheduled and completed.<br />
<br />
4. Parent Communication: Before starting large projects that will change learning for students, school host parent information meetings and discuss changes at school board meetings. Community and parent input is used to consider perspectives that may not have been considered. Committees that include parents and community members are created and used as a program in implemented.<br />
<br />
5. Staffing: More devices means there are more staff needed to manage them. An increase in tech support is an obvious increased need, but adding the instructional aspects means that new positions like Digital Learning Coaches and Instructional Designers are needed to get the most out of the invested technology.<br />
<br />
6. Preparation: Effective online teaching requires training and practice. Training, coaching, and practice are required to move from a classroom-based instructional model to one that utilizes technology for students benefit. Learning to use the technology is only the first part of this transition. Professional Development in pedagogy and transitional instruction needs to be considered also.<br />
<br />
7. Expectation: With districts willing to make the investment in 1:1 programs, there is an expectation that teachers will utilize the technology in their lessons. Teacher evaluation and support will consider increased digital learning use on walk-throughs and lesson planning. More technology systems will typically be used in paperwork and form submissions.<br />
<br />
A great deal of time, staff, and money is invested into making an online learning environment work.<br />
<br />
However, Education has been asked to make this pivot in a matter of days or weeks in the middle of economic and health uncertainty. Here in Texas, schools went on Spring Break only to learn midway through that they would not be returning to school for weeks. Within a short time, school was closed for the year.<br />
<br />
It is my belief that schools approached remote learning with the best of intentions. They did not purposefully exclude students with special needs or plan to exacerbate inequity. They did the best they could in a short time with less than adequate guidance as so many executive orders were being handed out so quickly without any idea of what will come next. Some districts have admitted defeat and called for the end of 2019-20 school year.<br />
<br />
What I hope and pray is that parents, students and community members will give schools a little bit of grace, that teachers will do their best to serve their students in this trying time, and that school administrators will spend time making a sustainable plan to address how best to meet everyone's needs in the event that school cannot be business as usual in 2020-21.<br />

We are all in this together and must take care of each other.Jennifer Wyatthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00906470591833386649noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3952752760730962984.post-38335019734221162802019-02-27T09:21:00.002-08:002019-02-27T09:21:53.523-08:005 Tips for Surviving ConferencesI was listening to <i>Take Control of Your Life</i> by Mel Robbins on my commute this week. After talking with a PE teacher, Mel made the observation that most people who make careers out of education are in love with learning and personal growth. It was like she was pointing at me when she said that. I love to learn and am passionate about learning experiences. This is why I adore attending conferences!<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It seems like Spring and Summer is when many of my conferences fall. As we move towards the end of one school year and start planning for the next, tons of teachers will be attending conferences to learn new things, improve their practices, and gear up for what is ahead. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As much as I love conferences, they can be overwhelming. Here are 5 tips for getting the most out of every conference you attend:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. <b>Plan Travel Ahead</b> - Conferences tend to be scheduled in big cities that require knowing where to stay, park, etc. Don't wait until the last minute to register, book hotels and travel. Registrations usually increase the closer you get to the conference dates. Save your travel budget by getting a early bird discount. Some conferences attract thousands of people and waiting until the last minute to plan can lead to higher prices and lack of access to conference hotels. If you are driving to the conference everyday, scope out parking and traffic patterns so you aren't left walking for blocks because closer parking is full.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. <b>Strategically Pick Sessions</b> - Most of the conferences I attend have several strands participants can choose from based on their role, position, or interest. Look at the conference program (or app) to look at offerings before you show up and select several options for each time slot. When your 1st choice is full, you can try your 2nd or 3rd choice if you select them in advance. It is also helpful to concentrate of sessions that follow a certain theme. If you need growth in strategies for one specific skill, attend sessions that help you gain in that area. A deep dive in a topic where you need growth is more valuable that dipping your toes into many pools of content.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. <b>Comfort is Key</b> - Conferences are notorious for long days, lots of walking, and few breaks. </div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Clothing: Be sure to wear shoes and clothes that will be comfortable throughout the day. Expect to do lots of walking. Those shoes may be super cute with that outfit, but can you walk for miles in them without pain and blisters? Check the weather and bring appropriate outerwear. Even if it is summer, some conference centers are freezing! Bring a light jacket, just in case. </li>
<li>Bags: Be mindful about what stuff you carry around. That big purse will get heavy as the day drags on. Would a backpack make your load lighter? Or a cart/bag with wheels on it. Doe the conference have an exhibit hall where you will pick up tons of free stuff? If so, where will that go in the bag you bring with you? What bag you bring doesn't seem like a big deal, but it makes a difference.</li>
<li>Food: Bring snacks and drinks with you. There may not be good break times, and you will need to eat on the go. Having granola bars, fruit, or nuts in your bag can be a life saver. Also, conference centers know you are trapped and charge enormous prices for food. </li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
4. <b>Take Notes and Make Connections</b>- Whether you like digital note taking or pencil/paper notes, write things down. So much information will be offered that having notes to jog your memory will be a huge help when you leave the conference. Record the presenter's contact information. Reach out with questions after the conference is over. They are there to offer support and guidance. As a frequent presenter, I am happy to help participants even months later if they reach out to me. Follow them on social media, like Twitter or Facebook, to continue to get ideas from them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5. <b>Prioritize Reflection</b> - Conferences can be like trying to take a drink form a fire hose. The sheer amount of information you receive at each session is exhausting. Spend time every evening reflecting on what you have learned, what was your biggest takeaway, and how can you use it in your life. Prioritize what you want to use and create a holding spot for good ideas that you can explore later. If you attend the conference with a colleague, plan time to reflect together. Don't want to wait until the end of the day? Use social media and the conference hashtag to share your thoughts throughout the conference. This can connect you in conversations with other attendees that can help your personal growth and learning.</div>

It is the last day at the Texas ASCD Conference in Horseshoe Bay, Texas.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcxBUO14406S4J0fJwHRlHOkLR5MR0UTkTWbsroUgbe327-2CdP7ZQ5PjZQNfT1Puf_alWCXLqCT0DEMnEo32Fpme_ggSDvMo9ikA6EEKWQ8JYkzBd3z_AAk0-5QmqnjyN_i0oH9jj9Ww/s1600/IMG_9926.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1203" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcxBUO14406S4J0fJwHRlHOkLR5MR0UTkTWbsroUgbe327-2CdP7ZQ5PjZQNfT1Puf_alWCXLqCT0DEMnEo32Fpme_ggSDvMo9ikA6EEKWQ8JYkzBd3z_AAk0-5QmqnjyN_i0oH9jj9Ww/s200/IMG_9926.JPG" width="150" /></a>My interest in this conference was centered around the Keynote Speaker on Day 2, George Couros. He is the author of <i>The Innovator's Mindset</i> which is a book I find tremendously inspiring. I <br />
heard him speak about two years ago, and he was just as inspiring this time around.<br />
<br />
One of George's eight components of the Innovator's Mindset is self-reflection. Self-reflection is not a concept we ask students to do enough. Many times teachers move from learning objective to learning objective without the time to facilitate students in self-reflection. We need to take the time to reflect.<br />
<br />
Guiding students to self-reflect after a learning activity or project is powerful. How do you feel about your efforts on the project? What went well? What could you have done differently? Giving students the space and questioning strategies to learn from their learning experience empowers them to better understand themselves and could push them to improve next time.<br />
<br />
However, I wonder if we help students take those reflections and craft a plan for improvement. For example, if students self identify time management as an area of weakness, do we work with them to create a strategic plan to accomplish tasks for their next project in a more efficient way? If a student says that finding good research is hard for them, do we connect them with the school librarian to help improve that skill? And what accountability do we assist them in monitoring their progress on that action step?<br />
<br />
It is important that we take the time with students to reflect. Model for them what reflection looks and sounds like. Have them reflect in a journal, Google Form, or blog. Show students how to identify individual challenges, and create an action plan to make progress. These skills are paramount to success in the classroom and their personal, future endeavors.<br />
<br />
But it isn't just students. Teachers could benefit from reflecting on their own practice. What lessons went well? Where could you improve? How can I incorporate my professional learning into my practice? Spending a few minutes each day writing in a journal or blog could help you become a more empathetic and thoughtful teacher, while honing your craft with students at the heart of your work.<br />

Looking for an easy timeline tool? Try the new Flippity Timeline template at <a href="http://www.flippity.net/">www.flippity.net</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The sample they provide is on the life of Mr. Fred Rogers. Find it <a href="http://flippity.net/tl.asp?k=1wblvWO2cMIo631VuztzbaJ31pWMjN1N9FYfSTsfLeKw" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each of the headlines can be expanded to see text, video, and images to better tell his story.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjswiKBytKkUOXk3xX0WGx5zFznKN9p6PADdhjNvOJR2Uzl3QyJ0pZBn8ZV33OSsvI1fpS1ccwxnH2gGwoTqZGq-TJmzhxdTMFIX-Zrpib8TCT44y2S1v1jVwDA1zb4yK3l22kJs-8_nMA/s1600/Screen+Shot+2018-10-03+at+10.33.51+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1334" data-original-width="1126" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjswiKBytKkUOXk3xX0WGx5zFznKN9p6PADdhjNvOJR2Uzl3QyJ0pZBn8ZV33OSsvI1fpS1ccwxnH2gGwoTqZGq-TJmzhxdTMFIX-Zrpib8TCT44y2S1v1jVwDA1zb4yK3l22kJs-8_nMA/s400/Screen+Shot+2018-10-03+at+10.33.51+AM.png" width="335" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a useful tool for many projects. Here are a few:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. The Story of My Life: Encourage students to tell their own life story using the Flippity Timeline template. Many schools complete a similar project on posters at the beginning of the year. Making this project digital helps students better share their story and makes it easy to update as they grow. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Document an Event: Timelines are a great way to document an event. Consider researching an event from History and produce a timeline, with images, text, and video, that relay that event. The timeline could easily become the basis for an oral presentation or exciting addition to a Google site. Use Gale US History or World History in Context for research.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Who Am I?: Students are fascinated by famous people. Use the Flippity Timeline template to chronicle the life a real person. Include different components of their lives, like family, awards, and career. Use Gale Biography in Context for research.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

On my drive to work today, I listened to a podcast from <i>This American Life</i> called "How I Got Into College". Ira Glass interviewed Rick Clark, Director of Admissions at Georgia Tech, about the applications process and strange submissions GT has seen. One of the things he shared was many submitted essays include the wrong school name. How embarrassing! But haven't we all done that? You write an essay or cover letter and just tweak it for the next application.<br />
<br />
This is a practical use of Google Forms and Autocrat. Create a bare bones essay that is general in nature, create a Google Form for application specifics, and use Autocrat to merge the two. The finished product will be a Google Doc and able to be tweaked if needed. Work smarter, not harder and increase the probability of getting the right school name! Watch below:<br />

This campus served grades 4 & 5, so we would call this more of an intermediate school in today's Education world.<br />
<br />
I vividly remember a few things about my 4th grade year. For one, I decided to stop using my first name since there were so many Jennifers in my class and went instead by my more unique middle name, Jeanean. In the Spelling Bee that year I was the last 4th grader standing. I wore jeans, a periwinkle sweater with a J monogrammed on the front, and a black pair of kitten heels. More importantly, I placed 3rd when I left out the "i" when spelling "obituary". Lastly, I remember Mrs. Rigsby, the school librarian.<br />
<br />
When you look up Librarian in a dictionary, you would find a picture of Mrs. Rigsby. She wore her graying hair in a bun high on the back of her head. Her glasses were worn on a gold chain around her next. I mostly remember her wearing skirts, blouses, cardigans, and sensible shoes. I remember her as an energetic and book-loving School Librarian.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM4KtMNQY_7t70IMLmRdovKEQpapmHZDnsdY9yQZpB4SYGDRjIMBoBakfugHQJXZ_wryJClu_xaqmToNKmYp8EZs6SBCJw9DiWODoKZfdbJrNPOYswpde2MO3MAH2g9L_EzEE4FS7SKOo/s1600/AreYouThereGod.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="300" data-original-width="219" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM4KtMNQY_7t70IMLmRdovKEQpapmHZDnsdY9yQZpB4SYGDRjIMBoBakfugHQJXZ_wryJClu_xaqmToNKmYp8EZs6SBCJw9DiWODoKZfdbJrNPOYswpde2MO3MAH2g9L_EzEE4FS7SKOo/s200/AreYouThereGod.jpg" width="145" /></a><br />
One book I was most interested in reading that year was not available to 4th graders. That book was <i>Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.</i> The story revolves around a young girl dealing with her interfaith family while going through regular puberty experiences. What most people, including myself, remember about the book is the chant that Margaret used in a effort to create enough growth to need her first bra. Written in 1970, Judy Blume's book was often challenged in the 1980s. It was during this time at the Madison Elementary Library that only 5th grade girls could check out this book.<br />
<br />
By limiting access to that book until a girl was in 5th grade, when we got "the Talk" in PE, Mrs. Rigsby was following normal school library procedure for the time. As a school librarian myself over 30 years later, not allowing students to check out a book that may not be appropriate for them isn't a plausible option. Now many 4th graders are carrying around a device in their pocket that gives them access to images and videos much more provocative than a book about usual coming of age issues.<br />
<br />
The proverb says, "<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Give a </span><b style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">man</b><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"> a </span><b style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">fish</b><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"> and you feed him for a day. </span><b style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Teach a man to fish</b><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"> and you feed him for a lifetime." </span>Historically, in education, we block students from access to things we deem inappropriate. With the influx of technology, we filter internet access so they cannot find information we think they shouldn't. Many times we miss the opportunity to teach.<br />
<br />
I want to challenge you, as educators, to teach them. Teach your students to select materials appropriate for them. Teach your students to find online materials that are appropriate for them. Teach your students to self regulate their information consumption.<br />
<br />
Earlier this week, I was visiting the online version of my hometown newspaper as I stumbled upon the obituary of <a href="http://www.portlavacawave.com/obituaries/barbara-babs-phillips-rigby/article_e34488dc-bb72-11e8-b152-a342611368ac.html" target="_blank">Barbara "Babs" Rigsby</a>. It included her picture, gray hair in a bun and gold-rimmed glasses on her face. Despite being about 10 years old when I last saw Mrs. Rigsby, her obituary described the exact person I remember: active, energetic, and dynamic. "<span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">She will be remembered fondly by all who knew her."</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"><br /></span>

Incorporating technology can add a level of depth to read alouds that improve the experience. If you want your read aloud to be truly magical, try the <a href="https://www.noveleffect.com/" target="_blank">Novel Effect</a> app.<br />
<br />
You may have seen Novel Effect on ABC's Shark Tank or this could be your first introduction. Novel Effect is an IOS app that listens to a person read a book and adds music and sound effects to enhance the reading experience. The app is free and the list of books in their database is huge and growing all the time. Classics like <i>Where the Wild Things Are</i>, <i>Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, </i>and <i>The Cat in the Hat</i> are already available in the app.<br />
<br />
Here is how you make it work:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Download Novel Effect from the App Store.</li>
<li>You will need to give the app permission to use the microphone on the device.</li>
<li>Open and select the book you will be reading.</li>
<li>Select "Read the Book" and wait for it to download.</li>
<li>Begin reading and the app will follow along with sound effects.</li>
</ul>

From classmates, teaching staffs, and content teams, building a positive group culture is an important foundation for constructing the learning that will happen in the future.<br />
<br />
Creating a collaborative Google Map is a simple way to make connections and start conversations. Each participant can add their own locations on the map with text and image/video details.<br />
<br />
Here are some ideas for using this activity:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Ask students on the first day of school to share where they vacationed this summer. </li>
<li>Ask students to share where they want to live in 10-20-25 years from now.</li>
<li>Ask staff at a faculty meeting to share where they went to college. </li>
<li>Ask staff to share where they were born.</li>
<li>Ask participants at a conference to share where they work.</li>
</ul>
There are many ways to incorporate this learning opportunity into your classroom, meeting, or training. Watch the video below to get started:<br />

I love tools that make it easy for users to find relevant information. We use many resources available from Gale in our schools, and they have a great tool for finding the best results.<br />
<br />
When you do a database search, it is not unusual to get thousands of hits. Sometimes it can be difficult for students to narrow their research to the best results. Although Gale provides many options for narrowing results, like subtopics, dates, and content types, the topic analyzer is a super helpful tool for just that. It creates a visualization of the results for easy selection of relevant resources.<br />

As a librarian, I help students find the right information for the right research task. Sometimes that becomes a multiple search process: search databases, search the library catalog, and search Google. No anymore!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks to two Google Chrome extensions, students can now search multiple sources at once.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If your school uses Follett Destiny as their library catalog, students can use the Destiny Discover Chrome extension to search the library catalog when they search Google. Watch the video below to see how to set this extension up:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/-DHK-UDaJ_k/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-DHK-UDaJ_k?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Popular digital resource company. Gale Cengage Learning, has released a Google Chrome extension for their Opposing Viewpoints database. This database is part of TexQuest if you are a public school in Texas and also available for purchase. This extension opens a sidebar of database results using a Google search. Watch the video below to see how to set this extension up:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ssR2WLMozz4/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ssR2WLMozz4?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So let's really power up the search and use both extensions in our Google search:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/QSIwFsQNia8/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QSIwFsQNia8?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Share these extensions with your Google Admin and have them pushed out to all devices. Empower your students to find great sources and love research.<br />

Flipgrid allows teachers to share a topic that students respond to with a webcam or other video tool. It is super easy to setup and students can respond from a Smartphone, tablet, or computer. All they need is the link shared via QRcode or URL.<br />
<br />
Foreign languages are using Flipgrid so students can practice their new language. Music teachers are using Flipgrid to listen to student solos. Teachers are using Flipgrid for formative assessment from day to day. Collaborating with classes in a different part of the world just got easier by sharing a Flipgrid so both classes can add video dialogue at times that work for them and their learning.<br />
<br />
Their site, <a href="http://flipgrid.com/">flipgrid.com</a>, is full of resources from video to print, webinars to infographics, shareable topics and testimonials. With a <a href="http://blog.flipgrid.com/news/2017/6/19/flipgridcertified" target="_blank">certification program</a>, educators can earn badges as they incorporate Flipgrid even deeper in their learning environment.<br />
<br />
Give your students a voice when you give Flipgrid a try.<br />

Either through a Social Studies, Foreign Language, Math or other class, students all over the world have made posters, brochures and presentations about their fictitious trips. There are many teachable moments and value in these projects, but if you are still having students create print brochures or slideshows, your students are missing the opportunity to be virtual tour guides.<br />
<br />
Google has recently made it easy to add Google Maps and embed code into new Google sites, making it the perfect platform to make these tours virtual. Using street view, 360 photo spheres from Google Maps, and 360 video from YouTube, student travel projects become completely interactive.<br />
<br />
Here is how you do it:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/z8PGFLeCDN0/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/z8PGFLeCDN0?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>

For decades, teachers have relied on scores on worksheets and tests to provide that information. With the availability of technology, new and innovative opportunities to make learning visual have emerged. This app smash is just one of those ways.<br />
<br />
You will need 3 apps for this activity: <a href="https://www.apple.com/clips/" target="_blank">Clips</a>, <a href="https://info.flipgrid.com/" target="_blank">Flipgrid</a>, and <a href="https://padlet.com/" target="_blank">Padlet</a>. Clips is an Apple app and only works on IOS (iPads, iPhones, etc). Padlet and Flipgrid have app for IOS, but work through the websites also. You could substitute another video creation tools if you don't have IOS devices.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Eqv_GBKSd4aCm86gCcVBRxJ3ukl7uogGZr1upCfGP_plrPlFhu52I1WTKD-Rr2HFM7V7S6DMg3pQzasPG6tDn2Vzi6afunCF3PPtJN1wuCjkK1yFdCd5puU-oA_ljCsM7cWyPO0jpto/s1600/clips.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="225" data-original-width="225" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Eqv_GBKSd4aCm86gCcVBRxJ3ukl7uogGZr1upCfGP_plrPlFhu52I1WTKD-Rr2HFM7V7S6DMg3pQzasPG6tDn2Vzi6afunCF3PPtJN1wuCjkK1yFdCd5puU-oA_ljCsM7cWyPO0jpto/s200/clips.jpeg" width="200" /></a></div>
Start by giving your students a prompt that can be answered with a video. Make sure the prompt allows for reflection and learning to be expressed. Replace projects like "Make a video about an historical figure" with "Make a video expressing how your historical figure would react to the current political climate in the US." The second prompt requires students to research and then apply what they have learned instead of relaying facts. There are layers to a project like this that show student learning. What did they learn about their historical figure? What do they know about the current political climate? How realistic is their prediction of reaction?<br />

Have students use Clips to make the video. Limit the video to 90 seconds. If students need tech support for using the app, send them to YouTube or just Google for tutorials.<br />
<br />
Once students have their videos made, they should upload to a related topic you have created in Flipgrid. Click <a href="https://youtu.be/4_f6jMU3b6E" target="_blank">here</a> for a video tutorial.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG0k0Xeu3XJqtYneC-bO8uJsGAcBv-x5sA6mjIfFzeFyoHP6RcxLyuc6e9BIeeT0LBqoBpl3BYx0Ymhll7vzJnF_UbkuW9LffuI7nICQqXaiHT-cy9aQMo2r2Lgbwkg-W_NtZkttEd5_c/s1600/padlet-icon_orig.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="300" data-original-width="300" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG0k0Xeu3XJqtYneC-bO8uJsGAcBv-x5sA6mjIfFzeFyoHP6RcxLyuc6e9BIeeT0LBqoBpl3BYx0Ymhll7vzJnF_UbkuW9LffuI7nICQqXaiHT-cy9aQMo2r2Lgbwkg-W_NtZkttEd5_c/s200/padlet-icon_orig.png" width="200" /></a>Or have students create their own Flipgrid and their own topics to demonstrate their own learning. Using a tool like Padlet gives you a hub that all students can post to, including the link to their Flipgrid. Curating all student learning makes it easy for them to see what their classmates have learned and gives an opportunity for peer- and self-reflection.<br />
<br />
Don't have a 1-to-1 classroom? No problem! This can easily become a group or center-based assignment where students share a handful of devices or use their own.<br />

They spend most of their time concentrating on that one assessment and forget the importance of gauging student knowledge and adjusting the rudder as needed. Formative assessment is more than just an exit ticket or weekly quiz. Embedded formative assessment can allow teachers to better meet student needs and differentiate to fill gaps before they become chasms.<br />
<br />
An awesome educator I work with, Doug Littlefield, created this Symabloo of Formative Assessment tools. Explore a few with your students and check their understanding.<br />
